Changes to my blogs URL and name

Welcome to Bumpkin, Broke and Reading!

Yes, that's right, I did it! I committed a blog sin and changed my name and URL. It's something I've been needing to do for a long time. My originally address was WendyEnglandMua.blogspot.co.uk and my name Wendy England MUA. Since deciding to take my life in a different direction, as a career in makeup just didn't seem for me, my blog has been neglected. It took some time but thanks to a #bbloggers & #crazybloggers chat on Twitter I found my new identity and simplified my life.

My blog is still a lifestyle and beauty genre, that hasn't changed. I simply changed my name (not birth name obvs, I'm still Wendy England) and URL. Upon doing this I have found a few things which I think every blogger who's going through the same needs to know, and do, so their blog doesn't get lost on Google.

I use blogspot so the following will be tailored for that (sorry if you use another platform):
  1. Sign in to blogger.com
  2. Under Settings on the left, click Basic.
  3. Edit your URL in the Blog Address box & hit save
  4. Write a post to say you have changed URL & name
  5. Contact Bloglovin team on http://tinyurl.com/pkh3fr3 (quick link) and tell them about your change and ask to move your followers to new URL.
  6. Update all your social networks with your new URL address
Have I missed anything?

It is really scary changing a blogs address because there's always the worry that nobody will be able to find you. Naturally you have to grow all over again to be seen on Google. Until people start viewing your blog through its new URL then Google won't recognise you.

What do you think of the new name?

International Body Painter Pashur Workshop

I had the privilege to meet and learn from the Internationally famous Body Painter Pashur. I took his workshop in Norwich, UK this week to learn tips and tricks from the best. He came all the way from LA, USA. The public can see him painting at Paintopia, Dunston Hall this Sunday (tickets on the door £6). I'm going for the first time to view all the wonderful artists at work.

Pashur has been in the industry for over 17 years and is known as "The Picasso of Body Art". The work he has created is out of this world! There are some artists that I've seen that can't do half as good on a piece of paper as he does on a body. His clients have included Nickelback, Playboy, TV show Skin Wars, Toyota to name a few.

When I heard Pashur was coming to hold a workshop at Jackie Hamiltons School of Beauty I jumped at the chance to take part. I surprised myself having never done an body painting before with what I ended up creating. After Pashur introduced himself I had to come up with my own idea to paint something. This threw me as I wasn't prepared and useless at doing things from memory. I found a photo of the roses my boyfriend bought me and with noting else coming to my mind started sketching them out on. It was my beautiful model Lindsey Beard's first time modelling for body art so it was a great experience for both of us. It took me 2hrs to paint in the end, stopping and starting while Pashur showed us how to lay the paint in different ways. The whole workshop ended up being 4hrs in total.

I bought some paints and brushes both from Cameleon so I'm looking forward to creating more art work in the future. Practice makes perfect after all.

No Make-up Selfie for Cancer response

Earlier today I took to Facebook to share my response to the Dare to Bare Selfies making the rounds and trending. Yesterday I was getting really wound up seeing every other post with someones naked face. Not because I thought they weren't beautiful, ofcourse they are, we all are, but because a message had been lost. This was my response to all the nominations I was receiving...

Thank you to everyone you "nominated" me to post a selfie without any makeup on. The simple idea behind them was originally to raise AWARENESS but has somehow got lost in translation and now it almost feels like people have to give money to charity. If you want to give, good on you!

The bare faces are meant to come with the saying - It takes less time to put your makeup on than check your breasts.

So here is me raising awareness with my boobs instead and asking you to TOUCH, LOOK, CHECK. I'm not asking you to part with your money, I want you to touch your boobs. Or even better get the man in your life to. He probably knows them better than you! Early detection saves lives.

TOUCH your breasts. Can you feel anything unusual?

LOOK for changes. Is there any change in shape or texture?

CHECK anything unusual with your doctor.

For me receiving these nominations is no different to a guy turning up on my doorstep and asking me to hand over my pennies. No one should feel pressured into giving up their money for charity. It should be given willingly. This "trend" is just that, a TREND. There are a million charities out there that are deserving of money. This Dare to Bare was suppose to raise awareness, instead people are losing friends over it. I feel a picture of bare boobs has more impact and gets more notice. I NEVER pose naked and have body issues so please don't slate me for doing this. I'm just trying to raise the awareness that has been lost.

I hope I don't offend anyone with this post on my sites, it's not my intention. If you have taken part in the trend then good for you and well done for donating. Just please don't make the people you nominate feel bad because they didn't. They may support other charities, some people just prefer not to join a trend to do so.

Norwich Fashion Week Vintage show 2014

Last night saw The Puppet Theatre, Norwich come to life for an 18th Century inspired Vintage Show during Norwich Fashion Week. I turned up at 1pm rising into a cloud of hairspray in the dressing room. The hair stylists were busy teasing and back-combing models hair into extravagant updos and everything was running smoothly. As I set up my makeup kit the other makeup artists started to arrive. The Makeup Artists and Hair Stylists were either currently studying or had qualified from Jackie Hamiltons School of Beauty. We were all showing our support of the school by wearing our branded T-Shirts.

We had all previously met to discuss the makeup and had decided that the bold white brows and lashes combined with either a pink or orange cheek and lip would stand out the best on stage. Everyone was helping out each other in regards to products - there was a lot of borrowing going on. Which reminds me.. if you took a brush home by mistake (easily done as we had to pack away quickly to make way for clothes) that wasnt yours can you please drop it into the school asap, its very much missed in someones kit, thank you.

I was over the moon being the first to pick my model to work on. I snaked outside to where the models were having a much needed break and spotted Jess from a distance and knew I wanted her. Her skin was amazing to work on and the colours really stood out. To book Jess she can be found on Sandra Reynolds Website. The second model of the afternoon was the striking Anna-Maria Green who has the most friendly personality. She's travelled all the way from Bury st Edmunds for Norwich Fashion Week. I used an orange palette on her as I had to alternate colours to make sure there was an even number of pink and orange hues going down the catwalk. Last but not least I was able to get my hands on a man! This was the first time I had ever applied makeup on male skin and he was a sport for letting me. I know it's very odd for a guy if they haven't had makeup on their skin before.

I was very happy with the end result on my models. After every ones models were checked under the lights a few models cam back to have their colours brightened. I then shot off home to get changed for the nights performance. I was lucky enough to grab one of the last tickets.

The theatre itself was very small but the models made the most of the whole area by walking up and down the stairs. I hold my hands up to them they really had a long day and ended it on a high. Many local designers showcased there businesses from reclaimed fashions to newly designed hats. I even discovered a few brands I didn't know existed in my own home town. I for one will be getting my knickers from Proudlock and Harry from now on. I would really like to collaborate with Mystic Magic as I was blown away by his couture head wear designs!

A huge well done to all the models, makeup artist, hair stylists, photographers and everyone involved. There's so much organisation that goes into a show like this and I'm proud to say I was a part of it. To read more see today's EDP news.

International Women's Day

When I was younger I wanted to be a Ballerina, I also wanted to be a singer, an actress and above all else Barbie. These "career" choices all had one thing in common, being in front of the camera. There was one big thing stopping me from doing any of these - confidence. Those who know me now are probably laughing because I have bags of confidence these days.

From the age of 10 I started getting spots and I was being bullied by my best friends for having sticky out ears. I didn't realise then but that would change how I perceived women for the next 18 years. Now I'm about to tell you something even more personal and would appreciate your utter respect on the subject. When I was 11 my farther took advantage of me. He didn't rape me but made a child do something that no child should. I had been silently dying inside having to hold onto that secret. I thought I would end up taking it to my grave because no one understood, but a couple of years ago I found out my mum had known but thought I was too young to remember. I had never told her for fear of her thinking I was lying. My dad left the UK not long after to pursue his career and has never returned. I was very close to my Dad but because of what he did it affected how I see men and always will unfortunately.

I kind of drifted through life not knowing what direction to take. A part of me was trying to hold onto my childhood. I tried every avenue from hairdressing to administration. At age 16 I dropped out of college and went back at age 18 to continue with thanks to a scheme from the job centre. I spent the next 4 years getting my HND in Fashion and Textiles. Several more years followed where I worked night shift at Sainsbury's. Age 28 I had to decide - am I going to spend the rest of my life working in a job I hate, which is making me ill, or try to find a different path.

I had been an Advanced Sales Leader at Avon while working at Sainsbury's and I had caught the self-employed bug. After a failed attempt at working in Telesales I got a job working on less than minimum wage in a hotel. Somehow I managed to scrap enough money together to do a course at Jackie Hamiltons School of Beauty. I had an interest in make-up but didn't really know how to apply it. I was always asked as a beauty blogger about makeup techniques so this seemed like a natural avenue to take.

Despite struggling every month to make rent and flitting between temporary jobs makeup seemed to draw me in. I was being inspired on a daily basis by the likes of Karla Powell, Alex Box and several new starters in the industry. Every time I would put up an image of my work on Instagram or Facebook I had a huge response. I couldn't believe people actually liked my work. I have met many new friends by being a part on the beauty industry. I feel accepted and have learnt that not all woman are bullies. There is a strong bond between women who support each other.

I know I have a long way to go but I've finally found my calling. As a makeup artist it's my work instead of me that shines. My inner child is happy she will never look like Barbie but she has found something much better - the love of friends and family, support from her peers and confidence.

So that's my story - What's yours?

Panic attacks

This is something very personal to me. I have been a sufferer of Panic Attacks since I was 15. I felt compelled to write this post after a particularly stressful time and hope that other people suffering from this will understand what I'm going through. To those who have never had an attack I hope this will help you understand what it's like and how to help those around you if an attack comes on.

Let me start by saying it is NOT a way to seek attention. A friend of mine back in school forever had a paper bag against her mouth given by the teacher to aid breathing. The popular girls would make fun of her and call her a drama queen. At the time admittedly I felt the same way, I couldn't understand why she was always like that but I didn't tease her for it. Now I understand it was an attack often brought on by the girls teasing her.. bullying her.

You see some people can handle stress. Stresses like 'I'm going to miss the train?!' or 'I have a deadline and I'm not going to meet it!' are the kind of things most people shrug off and then go home at the end of the day to chill out with a glass of wine and Eastenders. We all deal with stress on a daily basis. Anxiety is different for everyone, some are just more sensitive to it. When I was 15 I was naturally going through my GCSEs (youngest in my class, hence 15 not 16). This feeling kept creeping up on me like I had to leave, now! It was a panic attack I didn't know I was having. I had to get out of school to feel better - Fight or flight. When we have a panic attack our bodies releases adrenaline. Adrenaline is released in our bodies all the time but for a panic attack sufferer it's like an fire alarm going off just because you opened the oven door. We have sensitive systems and stress is a trigger. I spent a lot of days skipping school to avoid being stressed. I didn't know then why I was having trouble staying in school.

So what is a Anxiety/Panic Attack?

It's a sudden feeling of dread, the urge to flee to the nearest exit and to find comfort in the familiar. It's like everyone is staring at you and your naked. You start breathing rapidly and then gasp for air like someone has just cut off your oxygen. For some, like myself, there are chest pains, feeling dizzy and faint, nauseous, numbness (I get this in my hands and feet), sweating, needing to go to the toilet, extreme emotions and uncontrollable crying. What's worse is the feeling of derealisation (unreality).

Panic Attacks come on really quickly and peak after 10 minutes apparently. This is never the case. Some people report attacks lasting for up to an hour, but they are likely to be experiencing one attack after another, or a high level of anxiety after the initial attack. This is what I suffer from. It will always spiral until I can remove myself from whatever situation is causing it. I've found my car to be a safe place.

I've had panic attacks in a variety of places, airports, cars, on lunch breaks, shop floors, in bed at 2am. Once I was doing the weekly shop at Sainsbury's and half way round I started to get the feeling of dread. It was the middle of the afternoon and I was by myself in the middle of a busy supermarket. I left my trolly and went and sat in the toilets while my body went through the motions. This has happened on several occasions now when I'm doing everyday common things like shopping, cleaning, driving. I've been called a control freak and doctors have misdiagnosed me with depression.
A control freak doesn't break down, clutching her chest, unable to breath because something didn't go according to plan. A person with depression doesn't need to go to the toilet frequently while feeling faint and sweating. I can't and haven't ever been drunk for fear of losing control and being sick and don't like to be around those who are so actively avoid nights out which involves a high consumption of alcohol. I find those situations stressful.

Celebrities who suffer -

  • Johnny Depp
Johnny Depp may be one of the most popular actors in the world, but that hasn't stopped him from suffering from panic attacks for years. The actor doesn't speak about them very often, but his struggles with panic disorder are well known.
  • Adele
The most famous singer in the world in 2011 and 2012 appears to have suffered from not only panic attacks, but also social phobia and severe stage fright. Performing in front of crowds of thousands can give anyone stage fright, but there is a strong likelihood that her anxiety attacks were an issue long before she ever stepped on stage.

  • Kim Basinger
Some people get their first panic attacks when they're severely stressed. Others get their first one out of the blue, with no way to see it coming. The latter is what happened to famous actress and model Kim Basinger, who had her first panic attack in the middle of a grocery store. Her panic attacks were so terrible that she developed agoraphobia and depression as a result.

So what can you do when a loved one or even a stranger has a anxiety attack?

1. Remain calm. Let them know you are there for them.
2. Do not be forceful. Be patient, and accepting. Telling them you think they are being silly, there's nothing to worry about won't help.
3. Offer a glass of water and a paper bag if you have one. They may not want it so again don't be forceful.
4. I once had a panic attack in a cinema near the end of a film. My boyfriend at the time was fuming that I wanted to leave. If this happens to you stay positive for them. If you are part way through something don't make a big deal of it. You can do it again another time.
5. Remember they didn't choose to be this way.
6. Things to say as a panic attack happens: Tell me what you need now, breathe deeply and slowly.
DON'T tell them to calm down, stop being ridiculous, you can't go, pull yourself together, what's wrong with you?

7. Distracting them won't help. Oh look at what the cat is doing is not helpful.
8. Be supportive. Once the attack has passed they can feel down right depressed and lonely. Just being held sometimes works for me.

I hope this goes some way to helping you understand what I have to go through. Funnily enough the one thing I've found the most therapeutic is makeup. When I'm creating a look I can be surrounded by a 100 flapping models and artists and it doesn't faze me. This is why my pursuit of being a self-employed makeup artist means the whole world to me. I've finally found something that doesn't bring on an attack.

If someone you know doesn't understand panic attacks show them this blog post. If they still don't understand then do you really need them in your life? Surround yourself by people who do know you and will love you no matter what. Remember you are not alone.

Makeup Counter Interview Process

I've worked on many counters and applied for even more. The one brand I have always wanted to work for but never been given the chance is Urban Decay. The holy grail of counters is MAC; the brand every girl and her aunt want to work for. The two counters application process couldn't be much different.

Urban Decay is about Sales - If you are lucky enough to be invited for an interview don't expect to be sitting down and chatting. You are about to be thrown into the frying pan. Urban Decay want to see if you can 1. COPE and 2. SELL. The Area Manager will explain the products you have to promote and their benefits so don't worry if you don't know every product on their shelf.

You are now going to be traffic stopping. For those that haven't heard this term it means stopping shoppers when they are walking straight past you and showing no interest in you. This is where lots of girls fall flat. One girl I was with during this process left when she heard this. You will have to approach these non-customers and influence them to come over to the counter where you will apply either a lip or eye makeup. If you managed to get their bum on a seat that's the easy part (yes, the EASY part).

You now have to sell  the products you are applying because by the end of her mini makeover your need her to buy something. You can do this several ways. I prefer the compliment approach by telling her how gorgeous a product looks on her and how much it enhances her best features. Some people go the other way and tell the customer all their faults - baggies, dark circles, thin lips - and then show them how to cover them. There's no right or wrong! You just need them to buy as it's highly likely that if you don't sell anything then you won't be invited back for a second interview (this is what happened to me).

Similar brand first interview process:
Benefit and Clarins

Brands who do a phone interview before inviting you to a formal interview:
Clinique and Bobbi Brown

MAC is about the Art - now before I start I have never applied for MAC but I wanted to show you the contrast between different companies. My information below is from other people who have applied.

If you are applying for MAC then you know something about makeup and how highly this brand is rated in the market. You WILL need a portfolio to apply for this counter and know how to apply makeup to a professional standard. Initially you will have a telephone interview so be prepared for all questions. I like these interviews because you can have all your notes in front of you (try not to sound like you are reading them though).

Example Questions:
Name a current makeup trend and how that has inspired you.
What is your favourite product? How would you sell it to a customer?
What do you know about MAC? (MAC history)
Describe MAC
What can you bring to MAC?

If you are successful you will be invited to a formal interview and to perform a Trade Test. This is where you will be asked to complete a look on a model (which you supply) and supply your own brushes (MAC preferred but not essential) and tip.. take a MAC palette. If you are successful you will have a final interview to evaluate the Trade Test and more questions about yourself.

Example Questions:
Is there anything you would change about your look?
What inspires you?
Where do you see yourself in 3 years time?
What can you bring to MAC?
When do you expect to be promoted?
Give a makeup trend you may see in the coming season?

___________________________________________________

Can you see how different the brands are now? The processes will ofcourse fluctuate so be prepared for group interviews or formal interviews before phone interviews etc This is just an example of what to expect. Good Luck with your interview and please come back and share your experiences in the comments.

Makeup Artists' Assistant

On the 01/02/14 I headed off to London to assist a Makeup Artist who was building her portfolio of work. We met through the same place we both trained. Despite being there at different times are paths had crossed several times. Freya Bolton had seen my work and asked me to come on this shoot with her as she felt it would be a great experience for me, she wasn't wrong!

The shoot took part in Brixton at the Shooting Beauty studio where models, photographers and stylists come together to help each other build their portfolios and find work. It was a culture shock for sure - being a country girl - everyone wore fashionable clothing (not just the models) and personalities were big and bright. We were taken straight through to the back room which was decked out with mirrors and lights so hot I was melting - without them it would be impossible to work though. I help set up and spent most of my time taking photos and video. I cleaned brushes in between models and even had some input on looks.

We were a bit rushed because we couldn't find the place initially so had to work quickly as some models had to leave at certain times. We were also limited on choices of fashions as models had already worn most of the clothes for other shoots throughout the morning. I loved sifting through all the accessories. If it had been my own shoot I would have asked for the artwork on the wall though! It was these amazing pair of wings fashioned from metal. I found that more inspiring than anything on the rail. I love unusual props.

By 5pm we started to realise there was no way we were making our 6pm train home. We hadn't eaten all day and were starting to get tired. There was still a couple of meetings to sit through and 3 tubes to get back. Unfortunately Freya had to buy us more tickets to get home in the end. Lesson learnt - leave more time for shooting, you never know what may happen and best to have too much time than too little.

Overall I really enjoyed the experience and a huge thank you to Freya for paying for me to accompany her. I made a 2 minute video of the day and included a couple of the unedited images from the day. If you are looking for experience as a makeup artist I highly recommend assisting.

Girl Tattoo Sketches

Last night I was doing some research into getting another tattoo. My first and only tattoo I got a few years ago now is on my wrist. It's a small sausage dog which was drawn by Picasso. It means the world to mean! It took me years to decide what to get. A part of me was worried about it hurting but mostly I was worried I would get bored with a tattoo after awhile. I wanted something that meant a lot to me and although I don't own a sausage dog, one day I will. I even have the name picked out and everything. I kinda go gaga over little miniature dachshunds.

The only other way I'll get a permanent piece of artwork is if it's original. I use to spend hours drawing ideas. I came up with the two sketches above. Although the lady isn't original, I believe she was from a swimsuit book, the collaboration between my own drawings with the girl are. It's a cheeky way of making something new. I never actually got either of these done and stumbled across them last night. I'm going to stick them in a frame because even though they didn't make it to my skin they are still beautiful drawings and I should be proud I created them.

Expect to see more of my drawings cropping up as I've found loads I want to share with you

Sexting - Cheating or fun?

Lets have some fun... with thanks to Louisa over at RaraRouge blog this post is a follow on from her post 'Sexting. Why it is bad for your health.' She focuses on sexting as a teenager and why it can lead to bulling and even suicide. Please pop over and read her post. I'm going to chat to you about sexting as an adult and how it's perceived. I know this is a little different from my average posts but it's something that has affected myself and many women I know.

FACT: Sexting is defined as an act of sending sexually explicit materials through mobile phones. The messages may be text, photo, or video.

Whether you're single or attached you will no doubt come across sexting. I've lost count of the number of celebrities who have been caught 'doing it' via text. Remember when Tess Daly was ‘shattered’ after her husband Vernon Kay confessed to exchanging lewd text messages with five girls.
The Strictly Come Dancing host told her friends: ‘The trust is gone.’ However she forgave him for the sake of their children.

I myself have had to deal my boyfriends doing this on a several occasions. One ex couldn't understand how he was cheating as he hadn't done anything physical. Yet he clearly knew what he was doing had to be wrong otherwise he wouldn't have been hiding his phone, throwing it under the bed when I walked into the room or freaking out when I picked it up. It didn't stop there though as I suddenly wasn't allowed out with him and his mates anymore. I found out after we broke up through his 'mate' he had actually been meeting up with girls. One boyfriend joined dating sites using his own name, location and photographs. Relationship status though said SINGLE.

What the experts say about Sexting...
"If you believe in monogamy and expect your partner to be monogamous, it crosses a sexual and emotional boundary that is very uncomfortable for the other person," says Nina Atwood, author of “Temptations of the Single Girl: The Ten Dating Traps You Must Avoid.” “Since it involves a recipient, it’s a way of being sexually intimate with another person, and that’s cheating.”
Psychologist Karen Sherman, who also agrees sexting counts as cheating because it crosses boundaries and challenges trust, says it’s actually a more serious issue than infidelity.

I am no prude by any means. I have no problem with porn within reason. Those people have been paid to pose in magazines, perform on film for the sole purpose of getting the viewer excited. But when a person seeks out another to send explicit texts and photos back and forth a line has been crossed. It's worse than going to a bar and flirting because it's a way of being intimate with another person and those photos can actually be saved!

FACT: Sending or receiving a sexually suggestive text or images under the age of 18 is considered child pornography and can result in criminal charges.

So what does this mean if you're..

Single? Be cautious. Sexting can be fun and cheeky when done correctly. Don't send anything you wouldn't want you're mum to see. Once you hit send you lose all rights to that image and the recipient can then (if they are an asshole) post it on the Internet for everyone to see.

In a Relationship? Think to yourself 'Would I be happy if the tables were turned?'. Sending images and lewd messages may seem harmless, but it can cause serious damage to long-term relationships. Sexting each other can be a great turn on especially if you have been together awhile and trust each other. However sexting people outside of the relationship is cheating. And if your partner enjoys the rush of getting turned on via the web or phone, experts say putting up with the violation of trust shouldn’t be an option. Instead, the betrayal could be an opportunity for you to empower yourself and evaluate whether the relationship is worth salvaging.

Have you ever had to deal with sexting? Have you been caught out and sent a naughty text to the wrong person? I'd love to hear your stories.

Unique CV ideas

Lazy Sunday is happening right now. I was suppose to be doing a photoshoot today with my friend and a model but the model had to drop out at the last minute. So after admitting defeat and accepting that I wasn't going to get hold of a different model who would suit the criteria I decided to shift my priorities. You see makeup for me currently is more of a hobby. I collaborate with other newbies to build up our portfolios for future career moves. I have been in the beauty industry for nearly 3 years now and I've been a qualified makeup artist for 6 months. Work for me has been mostly temporary jobs to fill the time and pay the rent. As you'll remember from previous posts I wasn't born with a brush in my hand. The last 12 months haven't been fulfilling career wise. I'm at the stage where I feel like I could climb walls or start collecting cat ornaments unless I find a full-time job soon.

After several applications, some taking hours to complete, and several posted and emailed CVs I am still no closer to seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I have decided to go back to basics. The first step in the process of getting a job... the CV. I was staring at it and thinking if I had to read this would I care? It looked bland, structured and wouldn't be out of place in a filling cabinet. Perfect if I want to be forgotten easily. Where's my personality? Where's my USP? My skills and experience alone isn't going to tell the reader who I am.

What is a Unique Selling Point (USP)?
It's that something that makes you different to everyone else. When starting a business it's the first thing you have to discover otherwise what's the point in starting. You may have several unique selling points like being a people person, caring, creative, plays a trombone. I ask you to go away and write down everything that makes you unique. It's a great confidence booster.

That brings me back to mine. My USP isn't within my work experience or my education. For me it's all the things I have taught myself, life lessons which have served me. How do I show that in a CV?? Well for starters the boring layout had to go, it's ridiculously dull. I opened up PicMonkey and started from scratch. I had a look around online for some ideas and also what I had to include -

Must Include for potential employers - Name, Address, Experience and Education, Contact details

Did you know that most employers skim read CVs? What they are looking for are the above info and key words. These key words are normally within the job description itself so do your research. If they can't find those within the first 10 seconds then you and your hopes are thrown onto the discard pile. Don't use a photo. Our eyes are drawn to photos hence why Pinterest and Instagram are so popular. If you add your face to your CV however then the reader will miss important facts on your CV. Remember they are short on time and skimming. You can use colour but keep it simple, too many colours may look unprofessional unless your a graphic designer.

So here it is my finished CV. I managed to condense it onto one side of A4 after omitting all the junk and adding bullet points instead. Doesnt it look better! If you had to choose between reading the CV on the left and the CV on the right if you only hand 2 minutes to spare which would you choose? I hope this inspires you to review your CVs and good luck with your job hunting.

Looking back at 2013

Another year has swept past us at lightening speed. It has been a turbulent year full of highs and lows. I know many who have had great success in 2013 and I have been continually inspired by their whole-hearted pursuit of their goals. There have been several changes in my own life and one major advancement which is starting to become a major part of my life.

Pivotal moments of 2013

Left my position as Advanced Sales Leader for Avon - I had spent several years trying to find my footing in the Direct Selling industry but hit a brick wall when Avon Cosmetics moved into China and began testing on animals. I had tried all the tricks in the book to convince myself it didn't affect me or my job as it was only in China where these products would be sold but my heart won out. I could no longer tell my customers Avon was against animal cruelty when I knew this not to be true.

Enrolling onto the Level 2 Makeup course at Jackie Hamilton School of Beauty in March - Since starting my beauty blog and working with Avon I was opened to the beauty industry and unlocked a passion for makeup I did not have before. I took to the course like a duck to water, a duck with a gimpy leg actually but with a unfailing determination to better myself.

Moved home - In April Stu and I moved out of our home of 4 years and into his old grandparents house just outside Norwich. The rent would go towards his nans care after his granddads departure in January 2013. It was a hard move for us both as we didn't feel comfortable at first in this house that wasnt of our choosing. We have the constant worry of having to move again but not knowing when or how we will be able to afford to.

Collaborations - I learnt that collaborating with other creatives who are in the same boat was not only inspirational but kept me sane. I realised that I was not the only one who was struggling to start again.

Money or lack thereof - I will always remember 2013 as an unlucky year for work. I had many temporary and part-time jobs as it seemed impossible to get hold of a full-time job. This did allow me to sample different industries and see where I belonged. I joined several agencies and worked for companies such as Lancome, Coty Fragrances, Bare Minerals & Givenchy. Those were the highs and I met many amazing women on those counters. The low points were when I had to wash up day in day out and clean toilets (even vomit) in other jobs.

Relationship strains - Needless to say all the changes throughout the year put a strain on my own relationship. Some days wondering if it was all worth it. I am lucky to have the support of a loving boyfriend who knows what it's like to lose your path and have to start again. I would not have been able to get through the year without him.

When your 29 and trying to get your foot in a new door without any experience in the industry it proves incredibly difficult. I will continue to pursue my new path with gusto and hope that in this year that I turn 30 I will find a career, save some money and go abroad (I wish for this every year). The last time I went abroad I was 17.

2014 Goals to aim towards
Find a stable, engaging career which I can give my all to.
Continue to collaborate and create new projects which will inspire
Complete my makeup kit with brands who are against animal cruelty
Pay off some of my debt which has spiralled out of my control in 2013

I wish you all a HAPPY NEW YEAR and I hope this year is better than the last.

Business Collaborations

If I've learnt one thing from starting my own business it's to work with others. Funny isn't it really? You start out your own business because you want to work for yourself but soon find out that the only way forward is to work with others. I don't mean employing others either. I mean working with like-minded individuals and businesses.

Anyone starting out with their own business will understand the importance of collaborating with other businesses. If anything it helps you learn what works and who you want to work with in the future. Small businesses need to look at each other as partners, not competitors. By making yourself known to those within your industry on a local scale you set your business up for a better future.

Relationships in business are crucial to the success of your own. I have collaborated with many people and hope to continue this well into the new year. As a makeup artist I need models, photographers, stylists and more to be able to make my vision a reality. By joining forces with these other creatives who are also starting their businesses we in turn help each other to reach our goals. Today I visited Wedding Angels (photos above) on Angel Road in Norwich to view a wedding dress. The fabulous owner James has kindly agreed to loan me the dress for a photo shoot and in return he will receive the photos for his own use. Without this collaboration I wouldn't have been able to go ahead with the shoot, my funds don't stretch to the cost of a bridal gown. This way I get my photos for my portfolio and future publishing's and James business get free photos and press. It's a win win.

There are many ways to find businesses to work with: Word of mouth, social networks, email, yellow pages, even referrals. Sites like Purpleport and Model Mayhem and perfect for people in the creative industry. You set yourself up a profile and can put out casting calls for free. I have benefited most from Purpleport than any other in regards to collaborations. It's great for Time for Print (TFP) assignments but not so much if you want paid work.

Behind the scenes of the Ice Princess

A few weeks ago I joined a site for creatives called Purpleport. Within a week of joining I had answered a casting call to be a Makeup Artist for a photoshoot themed around winter. Being Autumn and that the shoot was going to be outdoors made for difficulties from the onset. The date was set and the model booked but the weather was against us. We had to reschedule for a couple of days after which meant finding a new model. Fortunately the photographer knew someone he had worked with previously who was available.

I looked for inspiration on Pinterest and YouTube. The Snow Queen theme seems to have been done to death and easy to find looks relating to it. I was given pretty much free reign on the look but was given a few ideas which the photographer liked. I ended up going in a different direction to what he previously wanted to accommodate the fact I couldn't work down her neck (the dress was on loan and worth over £200!). He was very flexible and happy with my face chart.

I chose to make the theme Ice Princess rather than Snow Queen as the model was so young. I made the headpiece by hand and also made the eyebrows (if anyone wants to know how I created them I can do a separate post on them). I mostly used MAC but several more inexpensive brands too. I ended up straying from my chart on the day as time was limited (I got lost on my way there). It was set in Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk. I'd never been there before and had no idea it was right next to a US airbase. I quite enjoyed watching the planes fly above.

I doubled as the stylist during the 3 hours we were there, adjusting hair, clothes and even posing the model. I had so much fun and got my hands dirty when I became I human smoke machine (no jokes please haha) when I was asked to throw talc behind the model to create the illusion of mist.

Both the model, Jodi, and the photographer, James Sheldon, were a dream to work with and so professional. We were all working on a TFP basis (time for print). We hit it off straight away, it felt like I'd known them for ages. We have kept in regular contact since and my photos are now in the post. If you follow me on Instagram you will have seen a few of the final images already; there are also a couple of images on my portfolio page. Once I have my hands on the photos I'll do another quick post for you.

Thank you for following me on my journey into the Makeup industry (っ◔‿◔)っ♡

Spending Ban Collaboration #4

Wendy England MUA

Wendy England MUA

I can't believe it's November already! I even went to the fireworks yesterday which means it's all about Christmas now. You may have seen from my previous post that I was almost a very bad girl. I nearly caved today when I found out Benefits advent calendar was going on sale. I was ready to part with £50 for 24 travel sized makeup products.. hang on make that 21 as 3 of the doors had small jewellery behind them. Fortunately it didn't go on sale when it was suppose to, this caused many people boycotting Benefit and heading to Ciate and YOU instead. I had to leave the house to do my food shop which I do every Sunday. No surprise that upon my return I found the advent calendar had actually gone on sale and within minutes was sold out. Thank goodness! I was saved from wasting £50 on something I was surely going to regret later.
