Makeup Artist in the Making

I finished work today to discover an email confirming my place on a new career path in 2013. I enrolled at Jackie Hamilton's School of Beauty, Norwich starting in March. I will be training to become a Level 2 qualified Make-Up Artist (MUA). It's something I have always had an interest in but thought I would never do!

I studied Fashion & Textiles when I was younger and finished with a BTEC & Higher National Diploma with a Distinction & Merit. I loved those 4 years and learnt so much as well as an AS Level in Photography, Distinction. I had visited the Beauty department several times when getting my models ready for catwalk presentations. Those beauticians/technicians/artists were always immaculate! Their make up flawless! I never fitted in with that crowd. I wasn't your typical fashion student either actually and didn't make many friends. I focused completely on my studies and didn't socialise. Class was always difficult for me as I was shy in big groups. I swore I'd never go back to collage.

I have been blogging for nearly a year and observing others doing make-up posts and vlogs and wished I had the skills to do the same. I have been searching for a new career path and after doing a bit of research found a beauty school in Norwich. It's a perfect choice to start a new career as their classes are small, no more than 10 and it's in the evening so fits in with work. It's costing £790 which is a lot especially when I'm struggling to pay bills so I did have to think hard about it. They accept payment in instalments which makes things easier. I did think about applying for a grant and maybe I still will.

I'm interested in hearing from other bloggers who have done a make up course and what you thought about it? Did you find work after? Why did you choose Make-up? Did you do other courses too?

  1. Have you heard of Rain Makeup Academy? It's online, and is supposed to be more affordable. I wrote a post about it earlier this year:
