Jurassic World Review

22 Years after the first film, Jurassic Park, we finally get a sequel worthy of the original. I remember when I heard that a script was being written for a sequel and I just squealed with delight. I've waited ever so patiently for Jurassic World to be released and finally today at 2:50pm I got my reward. 

Jurassic World follows directly on from Jurassic Park and ignores The Lost World and Jurassic Park 3. The Lost World missed the mark with forgettable characters and drawn out scenes. Jurassic Park 3 started to introduce new dinosaurs but it still couldn't leave a lasting effect on the viewers. Jurassic World has all the charm of the first with loveable characters, humour, brilliant special effects, new dinosaurs and lots of action.

Chris Pratt made a delicious leading man; who wouldn't love a man who can tame raptors? The kids aren't annoying, which was refreshing, and they have their own stories which give depth to their characters and brotherly bond. Keep your eyes peeled for a statue of John Hammond, the founder of Ingen genetics and Jurassic Park, which is in honour of Sir Richard Attenborough who played Hammond. He was hoping to return to the series but sadly passed away in 2014 aged 90.

It verges on a Godzilla style movie with creatures fighting each other but that's what makes this film so great, the huge dinosaurs!

So...? Couture Rio Toilette*

The So...? body fragrances have been a staple in my handbag since I was a teenager. In the late nineties they were very popular and my friends and I would pass them round each other during classes. Best of all they were so cheap!

I recently had the chance to test one of the new So...? Couture Eau De Toilette, So...? Rio. I tested both the Eau De Toilette and body spray. The perfume bottle was very elegant and chic and small enough to take to work. The top notes of pineapple, melon and mango were subtle and sweet but didn't last long on my skin. I couldn't even smell the heart or base notes. It's a shame really but everyone's skin is different and this toilette just didn't want to work on my skin.  I wore it day in and day out for one week and not one person remarked on it, not even my boyfriend. I will be trying out the other scents when I next visit Boots to see if they are a better match for me.

If you are sampling perfumes in your local store try no more than three on your skin at any one time and smell them again after 30 minutes. This way you'll be able to smell the base notes and see if it works with you skin. Remember Eau De Toilette's don't last as long as perfumes and this is reflected in the price.

Mad Max: Fury Road Review

One word - INTENSE! This movie has no low points, it starts revved up and stays fuelled until the very end. Having not seen the original Mad Max, despite being a Mel Gibson fan, I had no idea what to expect with this film. It pounded my senses and left me wanting several more hours of footage. I was excited to hear that Tom Hardy has already signed up to 3 more films.

Hardy as Max Rockatansky was the typical action hero but almost became a prop with the chase taking centre stage. Charlize Theron, Furiosa, was at her best with every look from her full of emotion. It always amazes me how she can show so much through emotion alone, an incredible actress. 

The lack of dialogue doesn't set this film back, it helps with the flow of the film and kept the action at the forefront. Director George Miller had a storyboard before the screenplay was even written because he envisioned one continuous race. This works well visually and makes a feast for the eyes while the score replaces the lack of conversations.

Amazingly over 80% of the effects seen in the film are real which is a nice break from the over-saturated CGI used nowadays. Mainly CGI was used for Theron's prosthetic arm and ofcourse the amazing weather formations. I'm so use to seeing drab colours on the screen when it comes to dystopian films but this was vivid and beautiful. This is a must see in the cinema and I really want to see it again!

I know everyone told me I should see this is 3D but I prefer my movies in 2D and the experience really wasn't any less, just cheaper.

50 Shades of Grey Movie review

    

The hotly anticipated Fifty Shades of Grey hit cinemas this 14th February and broke box office records scoring over a quarter of a billion dollars internationally. It received mixed reviews from critics but this film lover loved it! The haunting score from Danny Elfman coupled with newly released tracks from Beyoncé, Ellie Goulding and Sia were perfect.

 

Fifty Shades storyline for those living under a rock:

 

Anastasia Steele, a literature student, goes to interview the wealthy Christian Grey and falls for his charm despite his enigmatic reserve and advice to stay away. Not able to resist Ana's beauty and independent spirit, Christian Grey admits he wants her too, but on his own terms. Terms which require a contract.

 

Based on the Fifty Shades trilogy written by E L James, a woman writing for other women, the film stayed true to the book. Having read the trilogy myself I couldn't help but make comparisons - there were a few scenes which slightly deviated from the book. There were sex scenes left out which I feel wouldn't have added to the film had they been put in. I dragged my poor boyfriend along, one of very few men in packed cinema of groups of females all whooping and chatting throughout.  His view on it was interesting - it made him angry. Angry because such a character is what appeals to women. I tried to explain that women fantasise about trying to change a man like that and that's the appeal plus a man like him can only exist in fantasy. In real life an independent woman would tell him to take a hike.

 

For those who are going in the hope of seeing a full frontal of Jamie Dornan's *cough* portrayal of Mr Grey you will be disappointed, there's more for male viewers to feast their eyes. It's a modern romance for those with an open mind. The sex scenes played a major part due to the tastes of Christian Grey. After seeing two sex scenes they started to become monotonous, time which could have been better spent adding to the love story. I hope that for Fifty Shades Darker they will use less direct dialogue from the book as some lines really made me cringe. Some things are easier to read than hear.

2015 is going be an epic year for movies not to mention the hoverboard I'm hoping to receive for my birthday. We have two releases of the seventh film in a series - Star Wars and Furious. Will they hold up to their fans expectations? If you had to choose just one to watch which would it be? I'm a Furious fan.

It's been 22 years since dinosaurs plagued our cinemas and our hearts. I was too young then only 8 and didn't get to enjoy the thrill of T-Rex on the big screen. I have high expectations from Chris Pratt.

The second instalment of Avengers hits our screens in the summer. As a big Marvel fan I am waiting for this with baited breath. Rumour has it that Spider-Man might be making an appearance in 2016s Civil War. Sony are supposedly giving Marvel the use of this enigmatic character as long as they hold the creative rights. It will make a huge difference to the franchise if Spidey can finally join on screen but at what cost?

There are several new standalone films being released too, fresh blood in amongst all these old dogs. Firstly Tomorrowland which is based on a theme park at Disney World. After the success of Pirates which was based on a ride at Disney I don't doubt Tomorrowland will be just as amazing. Then there is The Walk - a story of French high-wire artist Philippe Petit's attempt to cross between the Twin Towers in 1974. A film by Robert Zemeckis based on the novel To Reach the Clouds and a remake of Man on Wire from 2008. I love edgy movies and this will be a seat-grabbing one.

So what will you be seeing this year? There are many more I haven't mentioned yet like the final instalment of The Hunger Games and Cinderella. What won't you be seeing and why?

Max Factor Skin Luminizer Foundation

I would like to review for you this new foundation by Max Factor*. I'm super fussy when it comes to foundation, often opting for a BB cream instead. I have terrible pores and imperfections on my skin and foundations tend to make them much worse. Also as my skin is combination I find foundation slips off my face after 4 hours of wear around my T-zone.

The shade Light Ivory suited my skin tone and despite being creamy to the touch settled with a matte finish once applied. My skin looked brighter but not shiny, something very important for those of us who are wary of luminizing products. I always set my foundation with a transparent powder for extra staying power so I can't say how long it would last without this I'm afraid.

About 4 hours into my shift at work I had forgotten I was even wearing foundation, it was so light to wear. I checked my appearance and no excess oil was showing through. I didn't have to touch up anything. After 8 hours it had started to fade slightly but I do have a physical job.

I would highly recommend this foundation to those like me prefer a light-weight texture. It had a light to medium coverage so concealer is still needed for inperfections. My skin didn't dry out nor did it fall off my face after a few hours wear so would be perfect for those with a combination skin.

Primark P.S. Love Day palette review

I've bought some great things from Primark lately. They seem to have upped their game in the market and I'm no longer embarrassed to say I shop there. This was the first time I checked out their makeup though. I found two cute, purse friendly palettes and I was surprised to see no broken powders as often expected with cheap makeup.

The range has a Day palette consisting of neutrals and blue/grey shade and a Night palette with more plum and dark shades. They both have 8 shades and a huge mirror. As I wear neatrals mostly I opted for the Day palette. I was eager to swatch this and had to try them out as soon as I got home. 

The colour pay off wasn't great. The photos are unfiltered so you can see their true colours. It took a few applications before I started to see a basic colour. The powder is very crumbly even in the palette, when transferred to the eyes there is much fallout.

I like to try the cheaper brands because sometimes I stumble upon some major finds which end up in my kit. This I'm afraid isn't one of them and will be put in my personal makeup bag mInly for the huge mirror. At £2.50 I haven't lost out on much but atleast now I can share with you a palette to avoid. If I were to compare it to another brand I'd say it was a knock off from Makeup Academy.

As a makeup artist this little wonder has been a staple in my kit since Instarted. I wouldn't dream of leaving the house without it. Sure there have been imitations but none live up to this product. It is a brides dream as it will banish those under eye dark circles from a restless night before the big day. It can be used anywhere on the face but you don't need much. Use it under the brow to lift or on your Cupid's bow to give the appearance of fuller lips. I swear by the original but you can now buy many shades.

Makeup Academy Matte lipstick

 

I can safely say this is the worst lipstick I have ever bought. I don't like negative posts and often refrain from writing them but I was asked to by several beauty bloggers so here goes. The lipstick in question is the new Matte lippie by Makeup Academy. I bought it in a hurry and because it was cheap, simply £1 - how could I complain really?

 

I took it to a photo shoot as I was doing the makeup and actually almost forgot to use it. I scrapped some onto a palette and used a lip brush to apply to the model. On first application it looked no different, the models lips were still showing through, so I applied a second coat but it just didn't look anything like what was in the tube. I had to blend in some black to make it thicker and darker hence why I haven't uploaded the final images as they won't show the true disappointing colour of the lipstick.

 

Honestly my first thought was did I pick up a fake demo? You know how some demo products are just plastic for display? Yep I thought that's what I had bought. I'm not even sure why there is an extra pot which you can unscrew as it's exactly the same product, not a gloss or top coat. I decided to wear it on myself today and it lasted 30mins before I looked in the mirror and saw just a faint outline left. I know I haven't lost out as it was just £1 but I was quite disappointed in Makeup Academy as I've often used their products without complaint. I felt it was only right I shared this with you as I'm always 100% honest in my posts and I didn't want to just show you the good products - for every good product there is a bad one right?

Kleenex Absorbing sheets

For all you glowing girls and guys this post is for you. I know that suffering with oily skin can be a nightmare because with an oily skin often comes spots. The "I've just rubbed my face on a chip shop newspaper" look isn't a trend and has never looked good. Despite what most people think, spots aren't brought on by lack of washing it's a build up of oils during the day which clog the pores. I can't go 2 hours without looking shiny. I use to try not wearing makeup up but it didn't stop my face shining and breaking out. I then tried popping to the toilets every few hours at work to apply a paper towel to my face. I found that they were actually absorbing some of the oil.

Then someone recommended Kleenex oil absorbing sheets to me. These wafer thin sheets didn't look very impressive and were very small. I thought I was going to get through a packet of these in 1 day! There are 50 sheets in a packet, surely not enough. I stuffed them into my back pocket and headed to work. 2 hours in I headed to the toilet, this time though instead of reaching for the paper towels I pulled out my Kleenex packet. I held a sheet upto my face and started blotting. To my surprise I managed to do my entire face with just 1 sheet and the results spoke for themselves. My face was shine free and the purple sheet had turned almost see-through.

Now I only use these. I've tried other brands but others have powdered sheets which is really bad for clogging my pores. Often the powder versions leave my skin looking like I put my makeup on in the dark, I end up with powdered patches. I couldn't recommend these sheets highly enough. Maybelline 24hr Color Tattoo review

 

Yesterday I was preparing for a photo shoot in Anglia square, Norwich. I was super excited to be working with the fabulous Nikkala from NAphotography. Her work is outstanding and I had no idea she was a student, her work looks so professional. The night before she had asked me if I could use gold glitter on the models eyes to complement the outfit. I wasn't prepared for this as I don't often use glitter, It's my least favourite medium for makeup. This prompted a mad dash to Boots 10 minutes before I was due at the shoot. I grabbed the goldest product I could find (thank goodness for my points card).

I had not heard of Maybelline's new 24hr Color (spelt the American way) Tattoo until yesterday - I think I've been hiding under a rock! The shade I bought was 24k Gold and it was stunning, a dream to work with, and the colour was so bright even without a white base. Me being the sceptic, having not had much fun with creams in the past, applied a gold eye shadow over the top to set it. The above photos show the true colour of the cream eyeshadow, I have not edited or used and filters. 

My lovely model, Claire Gaskings, who I had the pleasure of working on had such big eyes. Claire is stunning, at only 17 she was incredibly professional and didn't complain once, not even when I could see she was starting to freeze. The shoot took over 4hrs at the Twilight club and the makeup stayed on the whole time. I only had to touch up the lips while shooting. I think it's the best makeup I've done so far and itching to see the final photos but I'll have to wait a few weeks until the editing is done.

Tanya Burr Lip Gloss review

 

Happy Valentines Day my lovelies! I hope your spreading the love today. Give all your friends a great big hug, you don't need a boyfriend to celebrate :)

 

I finally got my unpolished talons on Tanya Burr's new makeup range available on Feel Unique and I think I'm right in saying soon to be in Superdrug. I've had to wait a little while as stocks were low... girls clearly cant get enough of this stunning makeup. What? You haven't heard of Tanya Burr?? She's a social whirlwind, buzzing round YouTube and dating Pixiwoos brother. An absolute stunner and I'm not jealous of her lips at all... nope... not. at. all....

 

I thought it would be apt to try the shade First Date from the lip gloss line and share with you my thoughts on this sickly sweet day. It boasts to be super moisturising, have incredible shine and rich pigment. Oh and to my surprise the gorgeous burst off strawberries up my nostrils. Now that's a fab way to spend the day, sniffing my lips. So if you see me walking down the street pouting I'm not sad, I'm trying to push my lips up to my nose haha. It has a thick consistency so can be worn alone. I'm wearing mine over my Topshop lip liner which I used to fill in my lip fully. It's such a pretty colour and flatters my pale skin. It makes my lips look fuller so I'm going to be wearing it all day, every day! Go grab yours and treat your lips this Valentines.

Duo eyelash glue reviewed

 

It's a staple of many a girls makeup bag. Without it we wouldn't be able to apply our fabulous false eyelashes to flutter at all the boys. There are many eyelash adhesives on the market but the one that I've found to last the longest in Duo. I had no idea this was supplied by MAC until I tried to hunt some down. It's surprising that MAC still sells it on their counters actually. Makeup counter assistants aren't allowed to apply eyelashes due to health and safety. Counter assistants aren't insured like a freelance makeup artist. If a customer were to have a reaction to the glue they could sue. Many counters don't even stock eyelashes now never mind the glue, we have to buy them online.

 

Well MAC seem to be the exception and stock this glue and their own branded lashes. My first thought was how much it cost, £15! When you think about it though you're getting a lot for your money. I found it quite runny initially and unable to apply it directly from the tube straight to the lashes. To overcome that I now use a dish. The consistency does thicken up when left to air for a minute. It sticks fairly well once it's aired but I still find it doesn't hold the lashes in the corner of the eyes. Tell me I'm not the only one that's found this a problem? It holds the lashes on without lifting after a few tweaking but I want to find another brand to use for photoshoots. I need something much quicker and effective when working to time constraints.

Kat Von D Foundation review

 

 

 I couldn't believe my luck when I won this foundation in a competition. I've always loved Kat Von D as an artist and a woman. I watched her before she had her own show LA Ink and admired her black and white tattoo work. If ever I were to get a portrait tattoo she would have to do it! Her makeup line came out in 2008 and it was her lipsticks that drew me in with their deep, rich colours but back then I wasn't a big lipstick fan so admired from a far. But now I really really want to get my hands on them. 

 

The foundation had passed me by until now. It appears to be a hit or miss product for most users. It claims to be medium to full coverage, highly pigmented and long-wearing. It's very matte so best to stay away from this foundation if you have dry skin. Unfortunately this shade 'Light 49' was too dark for my skintone (Light 46 would have been perfect as it has pink undertones). I was planning to keep it for contouring but it's too thick to blend well enough. The product claims to cover tattoos which would explain it's thick consistency. I wouldn't recommend wearing a product this thick for a long period of time and to wash it off thoroughly by double cleansing to avoid blocked pores.

 

Overall I'd give this a 3 out of 5. Best for those with oily skin for it's staying power. If you have dry or combination skin stay clear as it will stick to dry patches and make you look cakey. I love the packaging and pump dispenser but won't purchase for my own use. Kat Von D's line is exclusive to Sephora stores which as far as I know we don't have in the UK. I can't work out if there's anywhere else online they can be bought besides eBay. If anyone could help I'd appreciate it.

Urban Decay Naked Foundation review

 

This is the start of my foundation reviews. I have amassed a treasure trove of different brands and yet I haven't reviewed any!! Am I a beauty blogger? Since when did I stop blogging about products the moment they hit my dressing table. Well it's time I stopped being so lazy and get my review clogs on. I have 10 foundations which I have picked out to review individually.

 

 

Before reading please take into account my skin type -- Finding a foundation to suit my skin tone and texture is like trying to find a needle in the haystack. I have oily/combination skin, an oily T-zone with very dry and yet sensitive cheeks sums it up. I suffer badly from spots and blackheads and have acne scarring because of it.

 

Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Ultra Definition Liquid Makeup - A foundation which until recently has passed me by. At £27 it's verging on the high end scale and competing with Illamasqua, Lancome and MAC. It comes beautifully packaged with an easy to use pump. It dispenses just enough without wastage (very important at this price).  There are several shades to choose from and the labels ending in zero indicating a warm-toned shade, and shades ending with a five are for cooler complexions.

 

My foundation is 0.5 which turned out to be slightly too light for me but I'd rather it be too light than too dark. It's supposed to be a “weightless” and “invisible” foundation with a “luminous, demi-matte finish” and “buildable coverage.” I found it to be fully matte with a light to medium coverage. It was too dry on my cheeks which looked cakey but went on smoothly around my jaw and t-zone. As you can see from the photos it didn't cover my spots fully, not that I expected it to, so a dab of concealer would still be needed on top.

 

Overall I wouldn't buy it for my skin type. If you have normal or oily skin I would highly recommend it. It wears well and doesn't feel like your even wearing foundation. It doesn't have any SPF so make sure your moisturiser does before putting it on and heading out during the day.

Makeup Academy Collection

I've been using MUA for a few years now and have accumulated many a product. Naturally I have a clear out now and then and keep an eye on best before dates. Foundations, eyeshadows and lipsticks are generally good for 12 months, liquid eyeliners, mascaras and lip glosses need replacing every 6 months. I had a clear out this January to make way for new, exciting spring/summer makeup - ok so I'm a bit ahead but I'm so over winter now.

Inglot Pacific Blue Collection 290 Lipstick

 

I thought I would share with you my first ever Inglot purchase. Inglot is a brand I only came across because of studying makeup. It's not your typical go-to brand. The nearest store to me is Westfields in London (a 3hr drive!). I ordered mine online and was quite disappointed when they didn't show up until 2 weeks later! I have no idea why it took so long, I'm not even sure where I bought them from now. It has slightly put me off buying the odd item for photoshoots. If I want anything I'll have to buy way in advance just in case.

 

Photographed above is number 290 from Inglots Pacific Blue Collection. There are 6 shades of sumptuous blues in the collection. I bought another shade too which I'll review later. The lipsticks all have vitamin E and apricot kernel oil moisturise and protect the lips whilst the non-sticky, long lasting formula provides easy and even application. I found this glided on my lips both directly from the tube and applied with a lip brush. The striking colour does need some help to last though. I found the pink of my lips started to show through after awhile and made for an odd look. Blue isn't an everyday colour for lips but it sure is fun and looks fab on a cool complexion.

Cruelty Free brands

 

Since becoming a makeup artist one thing has stood out to me more than before - animal testing. When applying just a beauty balm and lipbalm was enough I didn't take much notice of the brands I was using. To be honest I closed my eyes and ears to cruelty in any form, not wanting to know the bad stuff going on in the world. If a nasty picture of an animal testing flashed before me I would glance away thinking 'I don't want to see that'. That doesn't mean it's not happening though. As I started adding more and more makeup to my kit I started to see that I could be aiding these horrendous tests! That thought was numbing. During my research I found everyday brands that I've used for ages that are tested on animals - Chapstick, Aquafresh, Clean & Clear and Febreze are both Procter & Gamble products, Dove, Comfort, Vasaline and even MAC!

 

I adore animals - in my households there have been hamsters, fish, stick insects, lizards, guinea pigs, cats and dogs. I volunteered at The Dogs Trust in Snetterton for 1 morning a week for 2 years. It was a 45min journey one way and I savoured the time I got to spend with all the different breeds - giving them a chance to leave their kennels and get some much needed exercise. The state at which some dogs came into the centre is very distressing for the staff to see. You would hear the stories of animals being tied to the gate for the staff to find because the owners are to gutless to admit how they have neglected the poor animals. Have you watched Paul O Grady's love of Dogs?

 

So I decided that if I'm going to be in this industry that I was not going to aid in any animal testing. The best way to do this? Use brands that are against cruelty. There are already lists available on Peta and Leaping Bunny but it would take you hours to go through them all. The simplest way to see if the brands you're using are cruelty free is to look for the bunny logo on the bottles. 

 

 

Unfortunately, three of the largest cruelty-free companies, Avon, Mary Kay and Estee Lauder, recently resumed animal testing in order to satisfy legal requirements in China, so that they could sell their products there. Revlon, which was one of the first large mainstream companies to go cruelty-free, is now selling in China but will not answer questions about their animal testing policy. Because of their refusal to answer questions, Revlon is now on the cruel list. Products sold in the EU remain free of testing since march 2013, see my post all about it here.

 

Below is my own list of brands which I have researched and found to be cruelty free. There are some known and unknowns which are worth checking out.

You will notice that I have listed 2 brands which are owned by L'Oreal (who everyone knows tests on animals). Why are Urban Decay and The Body Shop on my list then? This is a grey area and causes the most questions and opinions. When a cruelty-free company is owned or acquired by a parent company that tests on animals. For example, The Body Shop is cruelty-free, but was acquired by L’Oreal in 2006. Although The Body Shop still does not test its products on animals, L’Oreal continues to conduct animal testing. They were acquired on one condition - that they stay separate from L'Oreal and no animal testing at any stage of the process is carried out. It is your own choice whether you choose to use these companies or not.

 

In my opinion if we all stopped using the cruelty free brands owned by the parent brands what kind of message are we sending back to them? If we were to JUST use Urban Decay and The Body Shop and boycott any other brand underneath L'Oreal then at some point they will have to adjust their business strategy as they will see their primary income coming from the brands who do not test on animals.

 

Remember that an animal may only be a small part of your life but to them you are their whole world! Treat them with the love that they deserve.
